A tricone drill bit uses three rotating cones with cutting structures to crush and gouge rock. As the bit turns, each cone spins on its own bearing, allowing tungsten carbide inserts or milled teeth to continuously impact and shear the formation. In HDD and foundation drilling, tricone bits are chosen for medium to hard rock where durability and directional stability matter. Proper WOB, RPM and mud flow are essential to maximize ROP and bit life.
